After beautiful Nevgatis, the road leads to the picturesque great village Kontias, capital of the Municipality of Nea Koutali, which is one of the most beautiful in Greece. It is built over the wooded hill of Saint Athanasios with perennial pine-trees and it has to show wonderful houses of urban architecture-stone or plaster-, mainly its oldest part, which preserves solid its traditional color, with marble stairs, marvelous wooden doors, sweet-smelling gardens and great balconies. The road at the entrance to the village, which is decorated with an exquisite line of gigantic plane-trees (these were planted along the road in 1912 for reminding the liberation of the island from Turks), leads to the next village, Tsimantria. The traces of a prehistoric settlement, but also Vryokastro, a medieval castle, fill the bill for you who want to discover the historical past of this place.
