TRADITIONAL FEASTS

Culture isn’t only the ensemble of material creations of a society, but also the traditions, legends, fairytales, with which generations are brought up, festivities, songs, dances and customs…And Lemnos is, really, rich in all these.

Let’s have a look at some of its festivities:
•    On Easter Tuesday, the feast of Virgin Mary Kakkaviotissa.
•    The feast of Saint Georgios on 23rd April, at villages Platy and Kalliopi, where horse racings are held.
•    Famous the feast of Saint Ioannis, on 24th July, where people light 3 fireplaces in the middle of the square and everyone has to pass three times above them, in order to receive purification.
•    The feast of Saint Paraskevi, on 26th July, at the village Thanos.
•    The feast of Saint Panteleimonas at Adroni, on 27th July.
•    The feast of the Savior, on 6th August, where grapes are blessed, in order to produce fine wine.
•    Great festivities take place during the feasts of Virgin Mary on 15th & 23rd August, in Myrina, Tsimantria, Kaminia and Panagia.
•    The feast of the patron saint of the island, Saint Sozon, on 7th September.
