Sand dunes of Katalakkos
Here, you may meet a real desert, a remarkable phenomenon in Pan-European level. Sand dunes lie in a place that doesn’t justify their presence, 70,000m2 in extent approximately, at the village Katalakkos and away from the sea. It is an exceptional landscape with narrow vegetation that attracts more and more visitors.
Go for plunges in Pachies Ammoudies and walk as you can stand in the hillsides of the area. The landscape will not cease fascinating you, not even for a minute.

The chapel of Prophet Elias
If you have time, walk from Thermae to the mountain –a fantastic route of 374m- till the chapel of Prophet Elias. The view over there is panoramic and really incredible: dentelated coastlines, shoals and lands around it, the dam between mountains Krikela and Saint Dimitrios, and if the atmosphere is clear, then you may see the top of Mount Athos, Thasos, Samothrace and Imvros!
Virgin Mary Kakkaviotissa
Driving between the impressive geological shapes of hills and crossing Mount Kakkavos, mind the sign that directs you to Virgin Mary Kakkaviotissa. Follow the earth-road, knowing that soon you’ll be found in front of a stirring view: huge rocks of various shapes, which hide a chapel in their bowels.
Its white color makes an amazing contrast with rocks’ earthy color, while its blue rails remind you that, indeed, you are in one of the most beautiful Aegean islands. Start early in the morning and take the path towards it, if you are a fan of walk. Clean air, the route, but also the view, constitute an unforgettable experience for you.

Fakos
It’s time for some new experiences, while the ecological routes in Fakos and Saint Efthymia start from Diapori.
A natural narrow canal between the bay of Moudros and Diapori leads to the peninsula of Fakos, with many chapels. You may be found between great cultivated expanses, rich grasslands, agricultural cattle-breeding units and folds of exceptional popular architecture; besides, it is the ancient area of Kechagiades of Lemnos. It constitutes a wildlife refuge, with strong breeze, many brushwood areas, rugged coasts, narrow beaches, interesting multicolored volcano rocks and tree fossils of 17-21 million years old. You may pass some points of these routes only on foot, so if you intend to do it, make sure you have athletic shoes and a kit-bag with all requisites for walking.
Kokkina, a marvelous beach that took its name from its purple rocks, lies 7km away from Diapori. If you go there, you have to leave your car and walk about 500m away or organize a jaunt by craft or boat.

Fysini – Small port of Aya – Saint Marnos
Fysini is a small, almost deserted, village full of mulberries. It took its name from the strong winds of the area. Leaving it behind, you go towards the small port of Aya. On the left, you see the chapel of Saint Sozontas. This traditional worship place, just over the sea, disposed of stone cells for worshippers. Now, you see them all deserted. The road till that point is asphalted. But, if you like adventure, then you may walk or drive with 4x4 till the virgin and unknown to many people beach of Saint Marnos. There are tens of jujube trees left and right of it, while a line of windmills lies over its hill. Turn left on the sign towards Saint Sofia.
